Patna: The Bihar government has revised the security cover provided to several members of the RJD’s first family, reducing the protection earlier accorded to party chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and former Chief Minister Rabri Devi while retaining the existing security arrangement for Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav.
According to officials, Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi, who were previously receiving Z+ category security, will now have a reduced security cover following a review by the state’s security committee. The decision was reportedly taken after an assessment of threat perception, current public roles and intelligence inputs.
In contrast, Tejashwi Yadav’s Y+ security cover has been retained without any changes. The review also affected other members of the family. Former minister Tej Pratap Yadav, who is currently not an MLA, will now be provided only a single bodyguard. Rajya Sabha MP Misa Bharti has been assigned a smaller security detail, while Rajshree Yadav, Tejashwi’s wife, will continue to receive limited security cover.
The security revision comes at a politically sensitive time in Bihar, where the ruling NDA and the opposition RJD have been engaged in sharp confrontations over several issues. However, officials have maintained that the changes are part of a routine review process and are based solely on security assessments rather than political considerations.
The move has triggered political discussion in the state, with opposition leaders questioning the timing of the decision. The government, meanwhile, has defended the revision, stating that security arrangements for public figures are periodically reassessed and adjusted according to prevailing requirements and threat perceptions.
