Maharashtra: Devendra Fadnavis, Ajit Pawar quit ahead of floor test

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday announced his resignation at a press conference.

His resignation came after his deputy Ajit Pawar resigned from the post.

The BJP-led government fell within four days of being sworn in on Saturday.

Fadnavis was addressing the media, explaining how his party had the mandate to form the government.

The Supreme Court today made the announcement that the floor test in Maharashtra will be conducted on Wednesday.

The top court ordered that a floor test must be held by 5 pm on Wednesday. It had further said that the trust vote be held through an open ballot system and not through a secret ballot, with entire proceedings of the Assembly broadcast live.

Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar were sworn in by Governor Koshyari on Saturday morning after dramatic midnight developments, leading to the lifting of President’s Rule in Maharashtra.
