Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan questions indefinite reservation

Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Sunday expressed doubts over the effectiveness of offering reservation in education and jobs for an indefinite period, saying even the Father of the Indian Constitution, BR Ambedkar wanted quotas for only 10 years.

“The idea of Ambedkarji was to bring social harmony by introducing reservation for only 10 years. However, what we do is to extend the reservation every 10 years. There is a shortcoming,” Sumitra Mahajan said on the concluding day at the “Lok Manthan” event in Ranchi.

She further said that reservations alone will not be able to uplift the people and change the socio-economic structure of the country. She emphasized the need to follow Dr BR Ambedkar to bring social harmony in society and the country.

Commenting on patriotism, Mahajan urged the people to strengthen their spirit of patriotism to ensure overall development of the country.

On gender equality, she said, “”Respect to women is of great importance and should not be looked down. Women is an important part of society and without her, society will not move ahead.

Moreover, she said all citizens should come forward to participate in the process of nation-building.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das, state Assembly Speaker Dinesh Oraon among others were present on the occasion.
