Former Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party Convener Arvind Kejriwal on Friday alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has written to the election commission on alleged deletion of votes from the electoral roll in Delhi ahead of assembly election.
He accused BJP of filing an application to the election commission for the deletion of votes from various constituencies including Shahdara, Laxmi Nagar, and Janakpuri.
Citing data of election commission, Kejriwal said, “BJP has submitted an application to delete 11000 votes in Shahdara assembly constituency in a month. In the application they have said that these people have either shifted or have died. We tracked down 500 people and found that 372 of these 500 people were still residing at the same address.”
“We found that most of them were Aam Aadmi Party voters,” he claimed.
He said that there are a total 1,86,362 votes in Shahdara constituency out of which BJP wants to delete 11000 votes. “It means applications to delete 6 per cent votes from one constituency have already been submitted…don’t know how many more there will be,” Kejriwal said.
He also raised questions on the role of the election commission and said that the apex body has not mentioned this list on its website despite it should put these details in form 10.
“Election Commission should put all the details of application that comes in for removing votes on its website in the form 10 but only 487 applications are being mentioned on the website under Shahdara assembly constituency. The Election Commission has not updated the list of those 11,000 people,” he said.
“Applications have been filed to delete thousands of votes from the electoral roll from Janakpuri, Vikaspuri, Uttam Nagar, Sangam Vihar, Palam, Dwarka, and Okhla,” he added.
The 70-member Delhi Assembly polls are due to be held in February 2025. Besides the ruling AAP, the BJP and the Congress will be in the fray.
In the last Delhi Assembly elections which were held in 2020, AAP won a landslide victory and secured 63 of the 70 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won just 8 seats, while Congress failed to win a single seat.
