Beginning Sunday, Kashmir is hosting its first-ever international film festival, with 135 films from 41 countries set to be screened over four days at venues in Srinagar, Gulmarg and Jammu.
The festival opened with Lebanese director Sarah Francis’ Dead Dog at INOX in Srinagar, the Valley’s first multiplex to reopen after more than two decades.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, speaking at the inauguration at SKICC, said the festival marked “a new chapter” in J&K’s relationship with cinema and sought to position Kashmir as a global filmmaking destination.
Officials said the festival received around 1,100 entries, including more than 60 foreign films. India has the largest participation with 64 films, followed by France with 13 and Iran with eight.
The festival also features a floating screen on Dal Lake and cultural programmes showcasing J&K’s heritage, cuisine, handicrafts and traditional arts. Organisers said the event aims to reconnect the region with the film industry and create opportunities for local youth.
The best film award carries a cash prize of Rs 25 lakh, while the best director and best debut director awards carry Rs 15 lakh each.
