Congress-Janata Dal Secular (JDS) coalition in Karnataka on Friday received a new deadline from Governor Vajubhai Vala to prove majority by the end of the day, after it missed the first deadline of 1:30 pm set by the governor.
The Congress- JDS coalition government said it was bound to follow only the Speaker, who adjourned the house for lunch after a debate.
Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy in his statement accused the BJP of offering “Rs. 40-50 crore” to lawmakers to switch sides.
He asked the BJP MLAs what was the hurry to hold the trust vote and said why they could not wait until Monday or Tuesday to form the government. He requested them to have a discussion.
The Congress in a tweet calls BJP the most unprincipled Government in the history of India.
“The attempt to topple the Karnataka Govt through the unconstitutional directive by the Governor and the attempted bribery of MLAs shows that this BJP Govt is the most unprincipled Govt in the history of India,” the Congress tweeted.
On a request from a BJP delegation, the Governor had yesterday written to the Speaker that you have lost majority/confidence of the House.
“It has been reported to me that the proceedings of the house on 18-07-2019 for vote of confidence has been stalled and consequently adjourned without reaching any finality. This cannot go on in a democratic set up governed by the Constitution of India,” the letter reads.
On Wednesday the apex court had said that the rebel MLAs should not be compelled to take part in the proceedings of the State Assembly.
Following the resignation of MLAs, the coalition which formed the government with 117 lawmakers in the 224 Karnataka Assembly, will be left with 101 compared to BJP’s 107 including two independents.
