Lucknow: The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) examining the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024 and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024 held a series of high-level consultations in Lucknow as part of its nationwide study tour on the proposed ‘One Nation, One Election’ (ONOE) framework. The committee interacted with senior government officials, public representatives and stakeholders to gather feedback before finalising its report.
The meeting was chaired by JPC Chairman P.P. Chaudhary, while committee members, including BJP MP Anurag Thakur, participated in the discussions. Officials present at the meeting included the Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh, the Director General of Police (DGP), the Chief Electoral Officer, and senior representatives from departments such as Home, Finance, Agriculture, Industries, Education, Health, Tourism and Labour.
Speaking during the consultations, Anurag Thakur said the committee has been visiting different states to seek suggestions from political parties, government officials and civil society on the proposed legislation. He said the objective is to prepare a comprehensive report by incorporating practical recommendations and possible amendments before the proposal is placed before Parliament.
JPC Chairman P.P. Chaudhary said the proposal aims to reduce repeated disruptions caused by frequent elections and the Model Code of Conduct, allowing governments to focus more consistently on governance and development. He added that the committee has been receiving encouraging feedback from various stakeholders during its nationwide consultations.
According to the committee, the proposed constitutional amendment seeks to synchronise elections to the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies across India. The JPC is expected to finalise and adopt its report on July 17, after which it will be submitted to Parliament for further consideration.
