Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly was adjourned on Monday amid a ruckus during Question Hour, with the House scheduled to reconvene on Tuesday morning.

The disruption began after BJP legislators raised slogans of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Vande Mataram”, prompting objections from members of the treasury and opposition benches.

Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather asked the protesting BJP members to return to their seats and allow the proceedings to continue.

“Go back to your seats and allow the House to continue with proceedings. Don’t force me to take action against you,” Rather said.

The situation escalated further after CPI(M) MLA Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami asked the BJP members to raise another slogan, “Statehood ko restore karo”. This led to a heated exchange between Tarigami and the BJP legislators.

Langate MLA Sheikh Khursheed also became involved in the commotion, while National Conference leader and Khanyar MLA Ali Mohammad Sagar stood up and raised slogans against the BJP members.

The Speaker made repeated attempts to restore order as Question Hour was disrupted by the exchanges.

The autumn session of the Assembly began earlier on Monday, with Speaker Rather appealing to members to ensure smooth proceedings and make judicious use of the limited time available during the short session.

The House will meet again on Tuesday morning to take up the listed legislative business and other scheduled proceedings.
