After the release of final data of Assam’s National Register of Citizens (NRC) on Monday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed concern over the list, calling it a BJP’s strategy to isolate Muslims.
In a press conference, Mamata said, there were people who have Aaadhar cards and passports but still, their names are not in the draft list. Names of people were removed on the basis of surnames also. Is the Govt trying to do forceful eviction?”
“This is divide-and-rule policy. People are being isolated through a game plan, this will destroy humanity,” Mamata said.
She further added that she would take up the topic personally with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
After the year 1951, Assam’s National Register of Citizens (NRC) is updated for the first time to account for illegal migration from countries like Bangladesh.
Post the release of the list, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh assured that no one would be deported, and no forced action would be taken against those whose names are not on the list.
