Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro Max may receive a variable-aperture main camera that could be exclusive to the larger Pro model, according to recent leaks. The feature would potentially give users greater control over how much light enters the lens and could distinguish the iPhone 18 Pro Max from the smaller iPhone 18 Pro.
The claim was made by tipster Ice Universe on Weibo. Earlier reports had suggested that Apple would introduce the variable-aperture system on both iPhone 18 Pro models. However, the latest leak indicates that Apple may reserve the feature for the Pro Max.
Why the Variable-Aperture Camera May Be Exclusive to the Pro Max
A separate reported leak involving Apple supplier Tata Electronics allegedly mentioned a Sony IMX905 sensor with variable-aperture support for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. The smaller iPhone 18 Pro was not identified in those documents.
However, that omission does not conclusively prove that the feature will be unavailable on the smaller model. Apple has not confirmed the sensor details, camera configuration or differences between the two Pro models.
What a Variable-Aperture Camera Could Change
Unlike the fixed-aperture camera systems used on recent Pro iPhones, a variable-aperture camera would allow the lens to adjust the amount of light reaching the sensor.
This could give users greater control over exposure in different lighting conditions. It may also offer more flexibility over depth of field, allowing photographers to manage how much of the scene appears in focus.
The practical improvement would depend on Apple’s image-processing software, the final sensor configuration and how the company implements the technology. The feature is therefore not a guarantee of better image quality in every situation.
Other Camera Upgrades Reported for the iPhone 18 Pro Max
The iPhone 18 Pro Max could reportedly feature a 48-megapixel primary camera, a 48-megapixel ultra-wide camera and a periscope telephoto lens.
Another leak suggests that the larger model may offer up to 6x optical zoom and a more advanced five-refraction prism system. The iPhone 18 Pro, meanwhile, could receive a less capable telephoto setup. These reports have been attributed to leaker Ice Universe and remain unconfirmed.tomshw+1
The reported telephoto upgrades could give the Pro Max a clearer camera advantage over the smaller Pro model. However, the exact zoom range, lens design and image quality will not be known until Apple officially announces the devices.
Other Expected iPhone 18 Pro Max Upgrades
Other reported upgrades include Apple’s A20 Pro chip, a larger battery, a smaller Dynamic Island and an 18-megapixel front camera.
The Pro Max may also be slightly thicker and heavier to accommodate the reported camera and battery hardware. These details are based on leaks and supply-chain reports rather than official information.
Expected Launch Date and What Remains Unconfirmed
Apple has not confirmed the iPhone 18 lineup, its specifications, pricing or launch schedule.
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are reportedly expected to be announced in September. Some reports have pointed to September 9 as the possible date for Apple’s next major iPhone event, although the company has not officially confirmed the date.
All camera specifications, design details, and differences between the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max remain unconfirmed. Apple’s official announcement will determine whether the variable-aperture camera is exclusive to the Pro Max or available on both Pro models.
