India got off to a dream start when Navneet Kaur found the net in the fourth minute to hand her side an early lead. The momentum remained with the Indian team, and Sunelita Toppo doubled the advantage in the 15th minute, putting New Zealand under pressure for the remainder of the contest.
The victory capped an unbeaten campaign for India in Auckland. The team topped Pool A with wins over the United States, Japan and Uruguay before thrashing Chile 6-0 in the semi-final to book a place in the title clash.
