
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are embarking on a major academic expansion for the 2026–27 academic session. Driven by the recently released Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JSAA) 2026 seat matrix, the 23 premier institutes have added a net total of 666 undergraduate seats, bringing the overall intake to 18,826 up from 18,160 last year.
However, the more significant development is the introduction of 18 new academic programmes. This structural overhaul signals a growing national shift away from narrowly defined engineering branches toward interdisciplinary education that blends core technology with healthcare, design, sustainability, and data science.
While undergraduate seat capacity across the IITs has grown by roughly 3.7 per cent, the seat expansion is not uniform. The growth is heavily driven by newer, fast-growing campuses looking to scale their infrastructure, while a couple of older institutes marginally consolidated their numbers. The IIT Jodhpur leads the expansion with the highest increase, adding 140 seats (bringing its total from 610 to 750).
The IIT Mandi follows closely with the second-highest addition of 120 seats (raising its intake to 640). IIT Indore and IIT Palakkad have expanded by 80 seats each. IIT Hyderabad and IIT Jammu added 75 seats each. Conversely, minor structural optimizations saw IIT Dharwad reduce its count by 30 seats and IIT Madras by 3 seats.
Additionally, in a historic first for the 2026 admission cycle, the prestigious Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru has joined the JoSAA counseling process to offer its own specialized B.Tech streams (such as Mathematics & Computing). This pushes the total pool available to JEE Advanced qualifiers to 18,951 seats.
The introduction of 18 new programmes highlights a systemic pivot toward modernizing Indian engineering. Rather than simply expanding classic Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical engineering batches, the IITs are creating hybrid degrees to address acute industry shortages in next-generation fields.
Key programmatic highlights added to the JEE Advanced admission basket include, Healthcare and Computational Intersectionas IIT Madrashas launched cutting-edge B.Tech branches in Computational Engineering and Mechanics alongside Instrumentation and Biomedical Engineering.
Recognizing the immense demand for digital product developers, IIT Delhi, IIT Janpur and IIT Roorkee, have all debuted or expanded specialized B.Tech in Design programmes. Parallel developments at campuses like IIT Madras include new Bachelor of Science (BS) degrees in Aeronautics and Space Technology as well as specialized postgraduate and integrated tracks in Semiconductor Materials Technology to align with India’s semiconductor manufacturing push. New options such as a BS in Chemistry at IIT Delhi and a B.Tech in Industrial Chemistry at IIT Hyderabad bridges molecular sciences with industrial data processing.
Industry analysts emphasize that this dual approach—increasing numerical access while completely rethinking course structures—ensures that India’s technical workforce remains globally competitive. With the JoSAA choice-filling phase underway, students are no longer restricted to traditional choices, moving into an era where crossing boundaries between data science, humanities, and core engineering is the new norm.
