Mumbai: Relentless monsoon showers continued to lash Mumbai and several parts of Maharashtra on Tuesday, disrupting normal life across the financial capital. Although the India Meteorological Department (IMD) downgraded its warning from a Red Alert to an Orange Alert for Mumbai, authorities cautioned that heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds is expected to continue throughout the day.
As a precautionary measure, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) ordered all government, municipal and private schools and colleges in Mumbai to remain closed. Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from waterlogged areas and follow official weather advisories.
Heavy rainfall has led to widespread waterlogging in several low-lying areas, severely affecting road traffic and public transport. Local train services witnessed delays on multiple routes, while several flights were delayed or rescheduled due to adverse weather conditions. Airlines, including IndiGo, issued travel advisories asking passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport.
The impact of the monsoon has extended beyond Mumbai. Thane, Raigad, Palghar and Nashik have also received heavy rainfall, with authorities issuing warnings over the possibility of flash floods, landslides and overflowing rivers. In Thane district, entry to popular tourist spots has been temporarily restricted as a safety measure.
According to IMD, Mumbai has already received more than 60 per cent of its average seasonal rainfall within the first week of July, highlighting the intensity of this year’s monsoon. Officials have urged residents to remain vigilant as intermittent heavy showers and gusty winds are likely to continue over the next few days.
