New Delhi: Heavy monsoon showers lashed Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Thursday morning, causing widespread waterlogging, traffic snarls and disruption to normal life. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an Orange Alert for Delhi-NCR, warning of continued heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds over the next 24 hours. Authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain alert.
Several parts of Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Faridabad witnessed intense rainfall, leading to flooded roads, underpasses and low-lying areas. Long traffic jams were reported on major arterial roads, while commuters faced significant delays during the morning rush hour. In some areas, vehicles were stranded after roads were submerged under rainwater.
The downpour also affected air travel, with airlines including Air India, IndiGo and Akasa Air issuing advisories asking passengers to check their flight status before leaving for the airport, as weather conditions could lead to delays. Authorities advised travellers to leave early due to traffic congestion caused by waterlogging.
The IMD has forecast 180–250 mm of rainfall in isolated parts of Delhi-NCR over the next 24 hours. Weather officials said the active monsoon system is likely to keep conditions favourable for heavy showers over the coming days, with the possibility of localized flooding, reduced visibility and disruption to transport services.
Civic agencies have deployed emergency response teams and pumps to clear waterlogged stretches, while residents have been advised to stay indoors during periods of intense rainfall and avoid driving through flooded roads. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as the monsoon remains active across northern India.
