New Delhi/Kolkata: A major political crisis has erupted within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) after claims emerged that around 20 party MPs have expressed support for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), triggering one of the biggest rebellions in the party’s parliamentary wing.
The controversy intensified after senior TMC leader and MP Mahua Moitra publicly targeted fellow party MP and former cricketer Yusuf Pathan. In a strongly worded social media post, Moitra questioned the loyalty of rebel MPs and accused them of betraying the mandate on which they were elected. She also took a swipe at Pathan, suggesting that leaders planning to support the NDA should resign and seek a fresh mandate from voters.
The rebellion reportedly began after a group led by senior MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar conveyed to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla their desire to function separately while extending support to the NDA. Rebel leaders claim that nearly 20 MPs are backing the move, a number that could potentially help them avoid anti-defection provisions if formally recognized as a separate group.
As the crisis deepened, several rebel MPs held meetings in Delhi, with reports suggesting discussions with senior BJP leaders. The developments prompted TMC chief Mamata Banerjee and party leader Abhishek Banerjee to closely monitor the situation amid fears of a significant split within the party.
Meanwhile, Yusuf Pathan has not publicly commented on the latest allegations. The unfolding rebellion is being viewed as one of the most serious challenges to the Trinamool Congress in recent years and could have far-reaching implications for West Bengal politics and the opposition landscape at the national level.
