Haryana CM Calls Journalists the Conscience Keepers of Democracy

"Every word of news is a document of time, and every picture is a reflection of society's consciousness"

Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has described journalists as the conscious spirit of democracy, saying that truth and responsibility are the real strength of journalism. He said journalists do not merely report events but give words to the present and shape the history of the future. “Every word of news is a document of time, and every picture is a reflection of society’s consciousness,” he said.

The Chief Minister made these remarks while interacting with senior journalists of the Senior Journalists Forum led by its Chairman A.S. Prashar, President Jagtar Singh and General Secretary Kewal Bharti, at his official residence, Sant Kabir Kutir.

Welcoming the journalists, he said democracy is strengthened through continuous, meaningful, and vibrant social dialogue, in which the media plays a vital role. Highlighting India’s rich journalistic tradition, the Chief Minister referred to Maharishi Narada as the world’s first messenger, saying his mission was to spread truth, balance, and social welfare.

He also recalled the contribution of leaders such as Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Mahatma Gandhi, and Shaheed Bhagat Singh, who used journalism to awaken national consciousness during the freedom movement.

Speaking about the digital age, he said that while artificial intelligence and social media have made information travel across the world within seconds, the real challenge is ensuring its authenticity and credibility. He emphasized that experienced and responsible journalists have an important role in guiding society with truthful and verified information.

The Chief Minister said criticism is an essential pillar of democracy but should always be based on facts. He stressed that society needs not only breaking news but also positive thinking, practical solutions, and inspiring stories. Journalism rooted in truth, sensitivity, and accountability, he added, becomes a powerful force for nation-building.

Reiterating the Haryana Government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and dialogue, the Chief Minister said several welfare measures have been introduced for journalists. These include the Samman Pension for senior journalists, a group insurance scheme with the entire premium paid by the state government, and financial assistance through the Journalist Welfare Fund in cases of serious illness, accidents, or death.

He said the government remains committed not only to development but also to building trust and fostering a positive social environment. Expressing confidence in the media, he said journalists would continue to strengthen democracy through their impartial, responsible, and constructive role.

Director General, Information, Public Relations and Language Department, K. Makarand Pandurang, OSD to the Chief Minister B.B. Bharti, Media Secretary Praveen Attrey, and several senior journalists were present on the occasion.
