Four Nirbhaya convicts hanged to death at Tihar Jail

The four men convicted in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case were hanged to death at 5.30am today.

Mukesh Singh, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Akshay Kumar Singh were executed at 5.30 am for gang-raping the young woman on the night of December 16, 2012, so brutally that she died of her injuries.

Their death warrants were deferred by a court thrice on the grounds that they had not exhausted all their legal remedies.

A trial court on March 5, issued fresh death warrants for March 20 at 5.30 am as the final date for the execution.

Several police personnel were deployed outside the jail to control a crowd that waited to celebrate the execution.

A doctor inside Tihar Jail examined the bodies of them after the hanging and declared all four dead, Director General of Tihar Jail Sandeep Goel said.

Hours before the hanging, the convicts approached the Top Court.

In a late-night hearing, a Supreme Court bench dismissed final petition of the convicts, paving the way for the execution.

“We finally got justice. Justice delayed, but not denied,” Asha Devi, the mother of Nirbhaya told reporters after the hanging.
