New Delhi: A Delhi court on Monday convicted former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Tahir Hussain in the murder case of Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer Ankit Sharma, who was killed during the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots.
Additional Sessions Judge Praveen Singh of the Karkardooma Court found Tahir Hussain guilty of offences including murder, rioting, promoting enmity, assault, criminal force and unlawful assembly. The court, however, acquitted him of the charge of criminal conspiracy.
The court also convicted four co-accused—Nazim, Kazim, Javed and Anas—while six other accused were acquitted due to lack of sufficient evidence. The quantum of sentence will be announced after hearing arguments from both the prosecution and the defence.
IB officer Ankit Sharma was found dead in a drain on February 26, 2020, during the communal violence that erupted in Northeast Delhi. According to the prosecution, Sharma was attacked by a mob allegedly linked to Tahir Hussain’s premises during the riots. Hussain had denied the allegations throughout the trial.
The verdict marks a significant development in one of the most high-profile criminal cases arising from the 2020 Delhi riots, which claimed more than 50 lives and left hundreds injured.
