At least 11 people have died and several others are missing after torrential rain triggered flash floods and landslides in Jammu and Kashmir’s border districts of Rajouri and Poonch, prompting a large-scale rescue and relief operation.
Heavy overnight rainfall caused rivers and streams to swell rapidly, breaching their banks and inundating low-lying areas. Floodwaters damaged homes, roads and public infrastructure, swept away several vehicles, and forced hundreds of residents to move to safer locations.
Rajouri was among the worst-hit districts, with the new bus stand badly damaged and many vehicles washed away or submerged. All major rivers, including the Darhali, Khandli, Suktoh and Jamola, were flowing at or above the danger mark.
Officials said rescue teams recovered several bodies from debris and floodwaters, while search operations continued for people reported missing after houses were washed away or collapsed due to the flooding.
In the neighboring Poonch district, at least one person was killed and another critically injured after several houses collapsed. Rescue teams, assisted by the local administration, continued evacuation and relief efforts in the affected areas.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said he had been monitoring the situation since early Sunday and was in constant touch with local representatives and officials. He said protecting lives remained the government’s top priority and assured all possible assistance to affected families.
The Meteorological Department has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall across Jammu and Kashmir until July 23 and has advised people to remain vigilant. Authorities have activated control rooms and urged residents, particularly those living near rivers and vulnerable slopes, to take necessary precautions.
