New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared an emotional interaction with India’s Commonwealth Games 2026 medal winners, praising their perseverance and sacrifices while paying a heartfelt tribute to weightlifting champion Mirabai Chanu, whose Glasgow gold medal came after years of struggle and setbacks.
During the meeting at his residence, Mirabai Chanu opened up about the emotional moment after winning the women’s 49kg weightlifting gold medal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. She told the Prime Minister that she “couldn’t stop crying” after standing on the top of the podium, saying the victory marked the end of a difficult four-year journey filled with injuries, personal challenges and the disappointment of narrowly missing an Olympic medal.
Responding to her account, PM Modi said, “From every drop of your tears, gold medals are dripping.” He described the athletes’ struggles as an inspiration for the nation and said their success reflected years of dedication, discipline and resilience rather than just performances on the field.
The Prime Minister congratulated all members of the Indian contingent for their achievements at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, where India finished fourth in the overall medal standings. He reiterated his message, “Jo Khelega, Woh Khilega,” encouraging young Indians to embrace sports and strive for excellence.
Mirabai later said the Prime Minister’s words would motivate her to work even harder in future competitions. She thanked him for his constant encouragement towards Indian athletes and expressed confidence in continuing to bring laurels to the country.
