Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday urged leaders in Ladakh and Kargil not to rely on verbal assurances from the Centre and to seek written and signed commitments on their demands.

“Please do not believe any promise made by the central government unless it is given to you in writing and signed,” Abdullah said, describing his advice as that of a “friend and elder brother”.

He cited the Centre’s verbal assurance on restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, saying the promise made after the Assembly elections had not been fulfilled.

“We were also given a verbal promise that immediately after the elections, statehood would be restored. It has now been almost two years, and that promise is nowhere to be seen,” he said.

Abdullah said Ladakh leaders should insist on formal documentation, even in the form of an affidavit, if they wanted to secure their demands.

“Unless you get something in writing, in the form of an affidavit, I do not think the people of Ladakh will be able to achieve anything,” he said.
