Mumbai: Actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh’s controversial film Satluj, originally titled Punjab 95, has been removed from ZEE5 in India just two days after its OTT release. The streaming platform has stated that the film will remain unavailable in India until further notice while it explores legal options regarding the matter.
Based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, the film had already faced years of delays due to certification issues with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). According to reports, the CBFC had sought over 120 cuts, following which the makers opted to release the film directly on OTT under the new title Satluj.
Reacting to the film’s removal, Diljit Dosanjh said he had expected such a development. In an emotional interaction with fans and later through social media, he expressed confidence that once audiences had watched the film, its impact could not be erased. He also posted a message saying, “I challenge the darkness.”
Before the film was taken down, former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh watched Satluj and publicly praised it, calling it a “must-watch.” He lauded the film for portraying an important chapter of history and encouraged people to watch it despite the controversy.
The sudden removal of the film has reignited debate over censorship and freedom of expression in Indian cinema. Several filmmakers, actors and political leaders have also questioned the decision, while viewers have taken to social media demanding clarity on why the film was pulled from the platform.
