Delhi violence: Sonia Gandhi meets President Ram Nath Kovind

A delegation of senior Congress leaders, led by party interim president Sonia Gandhi, on Thursday submitted a memorandum to President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Sonia was accompanied by senior leaders including former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, Ahmed Patel, Mallikarjun Kharge, Randeep Singh Surjewala and Ghulam Nabi Azad.

On Wednesday, the Congress interim president held a press conference in New Delhi over the matter and had demanded the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

“The Central Government, especially the Home Minister, is responsible for the current situation in Delhi. Taking responsibility, the Home Minister should resign with immediate effect,” Sonia had said.

“The Chief Minister and the Government of Delhi have also proved to be a complete failure in maintaining peace and are also responsible. The failure of both governments has made the country’s capital a victim of this tragedy,” she had added.

According to officials, the total death toll in northeast Delhi violence has risen to 34.
