As Delhi-NCR continues to reel under a severe heatwave with temperatures crossing 45°C, the Delhi Traffic Police has launched an innovative pilot project to protect its personnel from extreme heat.
In a first-of-its-kind initiative, traffic police officers deployed at busy intersections are being equipped with special solar-assisted AC helmets that can reduce the temperature around the head by 8 to 12 degrees Celsius. These battery-operated cooling helmets provide targeted relief to officers who stand for long hours under direct sunlight.
Along with AC helmets, personnel have also received portable handheld fans, collar fans, and table ventilators to help them manage heat stress at traffic booths and roundabouts. To further support hydration, chilled drinking water and Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) are being supplied at key points. Temporary tin sheds have also been erected at several busy intersections for shade.
The pilot project is currently being tested at high-congestion areas such as Teen Murti roundabout and other major crossings. A senior police officer said the move is part of a broader heat-mitigation strategy aimed at preventing heatstroke and dehydration among on-duty staff.
The effectiveness of these cooling gadgets will be reviewed after the trial period before deciding on a wider rollout across the city.
Delhi and parts of NCR have been experiencing intense heatwave conditions for the past several days, making outdoor duties extremely challenging. This proactive step by the Delhi Traffic Police has been welcomed by many as a much-needed measure to safeguard the health and performance of traffic personnel during the harsh summer.
