In a landmark move towards sustainability, the Delhi Legislative Assembly has become the first in the country to function entirely on solar power. The Monsoon Session, which begins today, will be powered by a newly inaugurated 500-kilowatt rooftop solar plant, marking a significant shift in how government buildings approach energy use.
The solar facility was officially inaugurated on Sunday by Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal.
Speaking at the event, Meghwal lauded the initiative as a convergence of sustainability, technological modernization, and democratic governance.
“Delhi Assembly is setting a precedent by blending environmental consciousness with administrative innovation. This is where climate responsibility meets digital empowerment,” he said, also unveiling the Assembly’s new e-Vidhan system aimed at making legislative processes paperless.
Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta called the initiative a blueprint for institutional environmental responsibility.
He noted that the Assembly building, constructed in 1912 and formerly housing India’s first Parliament, now stands as a symbol of both heritage and progress.
“The solar shift is expected to save the Assembly approximately Rs15 lakh every month, translating to around Rs 1.75 crore annually,” Gupta said.
The opening day of the Monsoon Session will also feature the presentation of two significant audit reports by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India — one on the State’s finances for 2023–24, and another focusing on the welfare of construction workers up to March 2023.
In a major education policy move, Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood is set to introduce the Delhi School Education Bill, 2025. The proposed legislation seeks to curb arbitrary fee increases in private schools across the Capital.
A trial of the new e-Vidhan digital platform is scheduled for 11:00 am, followed by the formal House proceedings at 2:00 pm, which will run entirely on solar-generated electricity, without relying on traditional power sources.
