Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra shared a series of posts and videos on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, alleging that BJP workers hurled eggs and raised defamatory slogans against her during a protest in West Bengal’s Nadia district.
The incident took place outside the residence of party MLA Alifa Ahmed in Palashi, Kaliganj, where Moitra had arrived to attend a TMC meeting. According to Moitra, a group of protestors gathered outside the venue, shouting “go back” and “chor” (thief) slogans, while allegedly pelting eggs.
Claiming she was under siege, the TMC MP posted a video from the site with the caption: “Currently being attacked by BJP goons with West Bengal Police watching on.”
In a direct appeal tagging the Director General of Police (DGP) West Bengal, Moitra wrote: “Hello past 2 hours & your police is watching the fun & not dispersing the mob. They want me to flee & they will pelt eggs/stones while I enter my car. Please do your job. Disperse the mob. Am in NH Dhaba Plassey.”
Moitra stated that she had personally informed senior police officials, including the DGP, but alleged that no immediate action was taken to clear the crowd. She also tagged several prominent opposition leaders in her post, including Mamata Banerjee, Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, Supriya Sule, MK Stalin, and Arvind Kejriwal.
Defiant in the face of the protest, Moitra asserted her right to remain at the venue. “This is my area. I’m an MP here. I’m in my office. I am not going to move,” she said, adding that she chose to document the stand-off out of fear that the incident would later be denied and no legal action would follow.
Ironically, the allegations surface just a day after the Calcutta High Court directed the West Bengal government to ensure that police register FIRs in all cases involving egg-pelting, whether aimed at accused persons or political opponents. During the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), a division bench observed that even an accused person cannot be deprived of their fundamental rights.
Reacting to the incident, Samik Bhattacharya, the BJP’s West Bengal president, distanced the party from the alleged attack.
Bhattacharya stated that throwing eggs was “not BJP’s culture” and urged party workers to refrain from such actions, warning that incidents of this nature could severely damage the party’s image.
