India began precautionary doses of Covid-19 to those above the age of 60 with comorbidities, frontline workers as well as healthcare workers on Monday, as fast-spreading Omicron variant numbers spike in the country.
In this ongoing vaccination drive around 5. 75 crore people are eligible for the third dose in which 2.75 crore are above the age of 60, 1 crore healthcare workers, and 2 crore frontline workers.
Precautionary third doses of the vaccines were announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month. Also the government had launched a vaccination programme for beneficiaries in the age group of 15 to 17.
On Monday India reported 1,79,723 new cases and 146 deaths. Most of them are in the country’s biggest cities Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata.
However, with the administration of more than 29 lakh Doses (29,60,975) vaccine doses in the last 24 hours, India’s Covid-19 vaccination coverage has exceeded 151.94 crore (1,51,94,05,951) as per provisional reports till 7 am today.
