A court in Jammu on Friday rejected the bail application of Kamal Singh, who is accused of attempting to murder former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah during a wedding function earlier this year.
The Principal Sessions Court, Jammu, dismissed the bail plea, observing that the seriousness of the allegations, concerns over public safety and the possibility of the accused repeating the offence outweighed the grounds raised by the defence.
According to the prosecution, the incident took place on March 11, 2026, at a wedding function in Greater Kailash, Jammu, where Abdullah was present. Police alleged that the accused fired a revolver at the National Conference president with the intention of killing him, but the shot missed. The weapon, live cartridges and other evidence were later recovered during the investigation.
The defence sought bail on the grounds of the accused’s age, medical condition and alleged mental illness, arguing that he had no intention to harm Abdullah. However, the court said no convincing medical evidence had been produced to support the claim and noted that treatment could be provided while the accused remained in judicial custody.
The court also observed that the prosecution had placed prima facie material indicating premeditation and an alleged motive, and that the accused was alleged to have expressed an intention to repeat the attack if released.
Holding that offences targeting public figures have wider implications for public order and democratic stability, the court dismissed the bail application. It clarified that its observations were limited to deciding the bail plea and would not affect the trial on merits.
