Congress candidate Indu Raj Narwal on Tuesday defeated his BJP rival and Olympian wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt in the Baroda Assembly seat of Haryana.
Indu won with a margin of over 10,000 votes, according to the trends.
Accepting the poll defeat, Haryana BJP president Om Prakash Dhankar in a tweet said, “The Baroda seat was with the Congress earlier. We could not turn this opportunity as a challenge, the seat remained with Congress itself…We accept the mandate.”
Haryana Congress chief Kumari Selja said that with their decision, the people of Baroda had given a “befitting reply” to “anti-farmer and anti-labour forces”.
“The victory of Indu Raj Narwal is a win of farmers and labourers. I assure residents of Baroda that the Congress will live up to their expectations,” Selja said.
The Baroda assembly seat fell vacant in April following the death of Krishan Hooda, who had won the seat three consecutive times.
