Bhopal: A major political controversy has erupted in Madhya Pradesh after the Congress demanded a judicial probe, headed by a sitting Supreme Court judge, into alleged land purchases linked to Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s family in Ujjain. The opposition has also sought the Chief Minister’s resignation, alleging a conflict of interest in the transactions.
The demand follows a recent investigative report, which reported that members of Mohan Yadav’s family and real estate firms associated with them purchased at least 137 plots covering around 168 acres in and around Ujjain between December 2023 and December 2025, allegedly investing nearly ₹45 crore. According to the report, many of these parcels are located near infrastructure projects and areas earmarked for land-use changes under development plans announced by the state government.
Addressing a press conference, Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari alleged that the purchases raised serious questions about propriety and possible misuse of office. The Congress has demanded an independent probe by a sitting Supreme Court judge and asked the Chief Minister to clarify the circumstances under which the land was acquired. The party has also termed the issue the “loot of Mahakal land” and called for complete transparency in the matter.
The BJP, however, has strongly rejected the allegations, calling them politically motivated and baseless. State BJP president Hemant Khandelwal said there was “absolutely no truth” in the charges and accused the Congress of targeting an OBC Chief Minister. The ruling party has maintained that the land transactions were carried out legally by family members and private companies and should not be linked to the Chief Minister’s official position.
Officials associated with the state government have also defended the transactions, arguing that members of the Yadav family have been involved in the real estate business for years and that private business activities of extended family members should not be connected with the Chief Minister’s office.
With both the Congress and the BJP hardening their positions, the controversy is set to intensify in the coming days, turning the alleged land deals into a major political flashpoint in Madhya Pradesh.
