New Delhi: The central government is set to examine WhatsApp’s upcoming username feature amid concerns that it could be misused for cyber fraud, impersonation and online scams. Officials have indicated that messaging platforms could face legal action if new features create opportunities for fraudulent activities.
WhatsApp recently announced that users will soon be able to communicate using unique usernames instead of sharing their phone numbers, a move aimed at enhancing privacy. The Meta-owned platform said the feature would allow users to connect without revealing their mobile numbers and would include safeguards to prevent misuse.
However, government officials have expressed concerns that fraudsters could exploit the new system by creating usernames resembling those of government agencies, banks or other legitimate organisations, thereby increasing the risk of impersonation and financial scams. Authorities are currently assessing the potential risks associated with the feature.
Sources said the government is also exploring whether legal safeguards or regulatory measures may be required before the feature is rolled out widely in India. Officials stressed that cybersecurity cannot be treated as an afterthought and that digital platforms must ensure robust protections for users.
WhatsApp, on its part, has maintained that the username feature includes multiple safety mechanisms and that concerns regarding misuse are being addressed. The company has said usernames will not be publicly searchable and that users will have greater control over who can contact them.
