India’s first Chief of Defence Staff Bipin Rawat’s chopper has crashed in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. The crash took place in the Nilgiri a short while ago. Chopper MI-17 took off from the army base in Sulur.
Fourteen people including CDS Bipin Rawat, his family and staff members were on board. The crash took place in the Nilgiri. 13 people have died in a chopper crash and one is severe burn.
Gen Bipin Rawat had taken a flight from Delhi to Sulur earlier today.
The Indian Air Force confirmed on Twitter said that, “An IAF Mi-17V5 helicopter, with CDS Gen Bipin Rawat on board, met with an accident today near Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. An Inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident”.
“With deep regret, it has now been ascertained that Gen Bipin Rawat, Mrs Madhulika Rawat and 11 other persons on board have died in the unfortunate accident” IAF tweeted.
