Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Thursday changed his X bio to “former PPCC president”, signalling the end of his tenure as state party chief amid a leadership change being worked out by the Congress high command.

The change was made across his social media handles shortly after Warring stepped down from the post following the high command’s decision to replace him, according to party sources. The formal announcement of his successor is expected shortly.

The move brings to an end months of uncertainty over Warring’s continuation as Punjab Congress president. The party had only recently retained him as part of an earlier attempt to balance competing factions within the state unit.

The leadership change comes barely months before the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections and follows the appointment of Congress general secretary Sachin Pilot as the party’s Punjab in-charge, replacing former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel. Pilot subsequently held meetings with state leaders and assessed the functioning of the organisation amid continuing factional differences.

Frontrunner

Former Sangrur MP Vijay Inder Singla has emerged as the frontrunner for the post, according to Congress sources. Other names being discussed include Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Amritsar MP Gurjit Singh Aujla, Jalandhar Cantonment MLA Pargat Singh, Raja Sansi MLA Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria and former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi.

Singla’s candidature, however, is being closely watched because of the caste and regional equations involved in choosing the state party chief.

A prominent Hindu face from the Malwa region, Singla has held several important organisational positions at the national level. He is a member of the Congress Working Committee, AICC joint treasurer and is in charge of the party’s assets and properties. He is also a former Punjab cabinet minister who held the Education, PWD and IT portfolios.

His proximity to the Congress central leadership, particularly Rahul Gandhi, is also seen as a factor in discussions around his possible elevation.

Channi camp pushes for Jat Sikh face

Sources said sections of the Charanjit Singh Channi camp have reservations about appointing a Hindu leader as PPCC president and are lobbying in Delhi for a Jat Sikh to head the state unit.

The argument being advanced within these circles is that appointing a Hindu as state Congress president could leave the chief ministerial field open to Sikh leaders in the event of a favourable electoral outcome.

The competing demand for a Jat Sikh president has brought several prominent names into the discussion. Channi, Warring, Randhawa and Aujla are all sitting or recently elected Lok Sabha MPs, giving the choice an additional organisational and political dimension.

The Congress, therefore, is weighing not merely an organisational replacement but the wider caste, regional and leadership equations that could shape its campaign for the 2027 Assembly polls.

Pilot’s assessment and organisational reset

The change follows weeks of speculation over Warring’s future after Pilot took charge as Punjab in-charge. The Congress high command had sought feedback from state leaders and functionaries amid persistent complaints about factionalism and coordination within the Punjab unit. Reports on the leadership change have linked Pilot’s assessment of the state organisation to the decision to replace Warring.

Warring had earlier declined to comment on reports that he could be replaced, saying that “some matters are internal” and that he would speak when the time was right.

Meanwhile, Singla himself has played down speculation about his elevation, saying he was a “loyal soldier” of the party and that Congress leaders were working together under Warring’s leadership.

With Warring now out of the picture, attention has shifted to the Congress high command’s final choice.

The decision will determine not only who heads the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee but also how the party seeks to balance its competing factions, caste considerations and regional representation ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.

The formal announcement of the new Punjab Congress president is expected shortly.
