A botched bomb attempt on a railway track in Punjab’s Patiala district ended tragically late Monday night when the unidentified individual trying to plant an explosive device was killed by a premature detonation. The blast occurred between Rajpura and Shambhu, near Bathonia village, but fortunately, no other casualties were reported, and the railway infrastructure remained unharmed.
According to police officials, the explosion initially seemed minor, but further investigation revealed it was an attempted bombing that went fatally wrong. Patiala Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Varun Sharma confirmed that the suspect died on the spot, and his body was found severely mutilated. No damage was done to the track, ensuring uninterrupted passenger movement.
“We received reports of a low-intensity explosion at the Shambhu-Haryana border,” said SSP Sharma, who rushed to the scene with a team of officers. “Upon arrival, we determined this wasn’t just a simple blast. It was an attempted detonation, and the individual lost his life during the process.”
A crucial lead in the investigation has come from the recovery of a SIM card from the site, which authorities hope will help identify those behind the plot. Investigating agencies, including the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF), are now analyzing evidence to uncover the motives and connections behind the attempted attack.
The incident has sparked political outrage in Punjab, with opposition leaders slamming the state government over its handling of the law and order situation. Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring voiced his concerns, linking the blast to another violent incident in Batala on the same day. He warned that such incidents are “ominous signs” threatening the state’s hard-earned peace.
“The government seems more focused on political survival than ensuring the safety of Punjab’s people,” Warring said in a post on X.
Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh Badal also condemned the incident, calling it a “serious intelligence failure.” He suggested that authorities had ignored prior threats and failed to take preventive measures, linking the attack to previous incidents, including bombings at police stations and an RPG strike on the State Intelligence Headquarters.
As the investigation intensifies, authorities are under pressure to resolve the case quickly, with hopes that new leads will shed light on who was behind the foiled bombing attempt and what their intentions were.
