The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has issued a legal notice to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, asking him to either substantiate his allegations that the party was attempting to poach National Conference (NC) legislators or publicly apologise within seven days.
“The BJP Jammu and Kashmir has sent a legal notice to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah through post/mail, demanding that he either provide concrete evidence to substantiate his allegations of ‘poaching’ against the BJP or issue a public apology within seven days,” a BJP spokesperson said in a statement on Monday.
The spokesperson said that if Abdullah fails to provide evidence or apologise, the party will file a defamation suit seeking Rs 100 crore in damages over his allegations that BJP leaders were offering Rs 20–30 crore to MLAs to switch sides.
The legal notice follows remarks made by Abdullah while addressing NC workers at Hazratbal last week. The chief minister alleged that the BJP was trying to topple his government by engineering a split within the National Conference.
Abdullah also claimed that an NC legislator from Jammu had informed him that he was offered Rs 20–30 crore along with a ministerial berth to join the BJP.
