BJP leader and two members of his family were killed on Wednesday night after terrorists opened fire at them in Jammu and Kashmir’s Bandipora district.
Police said Sheikh Wasim, his father and brother were attacked at around 9 pm while sitting outside a shop near a police station in Bandipora. All three suffered injuries in the attack and were rushed to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
Kashmir Zone Police in a tweet said, “#Terrorists fired upon BJP worker Wasim Bari at #Bandipora. During indiscrimnate firing Wasim Bari, his father Bashir Ahmad and his brother Umer Bashir got injured and shifted to hospital but unfortunately all the three #succumbed to their injuries.”
PM Modi over telephone enquired about the killing and extended his condolences to Wasim’s family, said Union Minister Jitendra Singh.
“Over the telephone, PM @narendramodi enquired about the gruesome killing of Wasim Bari. He also extended condolences to the family of Wasim,” Jitendra Singh tweeted.
BJP National President JP Nadda described it as “a cowardly attack”.
“We lost Sheikh Waseem Bari, his father & brother in Bandipora, J&K today in a cowardly attack on them. This is a huge loss for the party. My deepest condolences are with the family. The entire Party stands with the bereaved family. I assure that their sacrifice will not go in vain,” Nadda tweeted.
BJP national secretary Ram Madhav expressed shock over Bari’s killing. “Shocked and saddened by d killing of young BJP leader Wasim Bari and his brother by terrorists in Bandipora. Bari’s father who is also a senior leader was injured. This despite 8 security commandos. Condolences to d family,” he tweeted.
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also condemned the attack.
“Sorry to hear about the murderous terror attack on the BJP functionaries and their father in Bandipore earlier this evening,” said the National Conference leader in a tweet. “My condolences to their families in this time of grief. Sadly the violent targeting of mainstream political workers continues unabated,” Omar tweeted.
According to the sources, all Personal Security Officers (PSOs) guarding the BJP leader were taken into custody after the attack for dereliction of duty.
