Aban Ahmad, the youngest son of slain gangster-turned-politician and former MP Atiq Ahmad, was killed in a road accident on the Jhansi-Kanpur highway on Thursday while travelling to meet his elder brother Ali Ahmad, who is lodged in Jhansi jail.
According to police, Aban was travelling from Prayagraj to Jhansi with four others when their speeding car lost control and crashed into a road divider near the Poonch police station area in Jhansi district.
The impact of the crash was severe. Aban and one of his companions died on the spot, while the three other occupants suffered serious injuries.
Local residents and passersby rushed to the spot, pulled the injured out of the damaged vehicle and informed the police. All the injured were taken to the Community Health Centre in Moth, where doctors declared Aban and another occupant dead.
After completing the required legal formalities, police sent the bodies for post-mortem examination.
The three injured were later referred to Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College in Jhansi for advanced treatment as their condition was stated to be critical.
Senior police officials visited the accident site and started an investigation.
Police said preliminary findings suggest that the driver lost control of the vehicle due to overspeeding, causing it to hit the divider.
Aban was the youngest son of Atiq Ahmad. His elder brother, Ali Ahmad, is currently lodged in Jhansi jail.
Family’s troubled past
The accident comes more than three years after Aban’s elder brother, Asad Ahmad, was killed in an encounter with the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) in Jhansi in April 2023. Asad and his associate Ghulam were wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case and carried a reward of ₹5 lakh each.
In April 2023 itself, Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf Ahmad were shot dead by three assailants while they were being escorted by police for a medical examination at a hospital in Prayagraj.
