Asian Games 2018: India wins Silver in Women’s hockey Final

Indian women’s hockey team won the silver medal in the finals of the Women’s hockey event at Asian Games in Jakarta.

India lost the finals to Japan by 1-2 in a close fought match. Minami Shimizu of Japan was the first to goal in the 11th minute as Neha Goyal provided India with a much-needed equalizer in the 25th minute of the match. Meanwhile, Japan took the lead again in the 44th minute as Motomi Kawamura scored from a penalty corner. Indian eves pushed a lot and tried to look for the equalizer but the Japanese team had moved most of its player into its half and created a strong defense which was difficult to penetrate.

At the end of full time, Japan won the match by 2-1 to claim the gold medal while the Indian team had to settle for the silver.

President of India, Ram Nath Kovind applauded the team and said, “Congratulations to the Indian Women’s Hockey Team for winning the Silver at the @AsianGames2018. India is delighted by your stellar performance. Well played. We are all very proud of you!”

Congratulating team India for a great performance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “Absolutely thrilled by the success of the women’s Hockey Team! Their spectacular performance is a matter of immense happiness for the 125 crore people of India. Congratulations on winning the Silver!”

India’s total medal tally at the Asian games 2018 now stands at 65 with thirteen gold, twenty-three silver, and twenty-nine bronze.
