The Indian Army, in collaboration with the district administration Kupwara, has launched a major initiative to promote tourism in North Kashmir’s border areas, projecting destinations such as Keran, Machhal, Karnah, Tangdhar, Gurez and Bangus Valley as emerging tourist hotspots.
The initiative was unveiled during a tourism promotion event in Kupwara where an online tourism portal, Shumali Kashmir, and a comprehensive North Kashmir Tourism Magazine were released. Developed by the Army, the platforms aim to showcase the region’s scenic beauty, cultural heritage and adventure tourism potential while generating livelihood opportunities for local communities.
The magazine highlights several lesser-known attractions, including the Shina Cultural Centre in Machhal, Kalaroos caves, Lolab Valley, Chakwali village near the Line of Control, and high-altitude mountain passes. It also provides travel information, accommodation details and trekking routes.
An exhibition of locally made products and enterprises supported by the Army was also held, featuring entrepreneurs from sectors such as handicrafts, hospitality and manufacturing.
Officials said the initiative focuses on community-based and sustainable tourism, with the objective of ensuring economic benefits reach border villages through homestays, transport services, handicrafts and women-led businesses.
