Why Is the Amit Shah-Nityanand Rai Photo Going Viral?
A photograph of Union Home Minister Amit Shah visiting the Delhi residence of Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai has triggered fresh political discussion, with Rai’s past association with Shah adding to the interest.

A photograph of Union Home Minister Amit Shah meeting the family of Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai at Rai’s Delhi residence has been circulating widely on social media.
The visit has sparked political speculation, with some linking it to a possible Cabinet expansion or a larger role for Rai. However, there is no official indication that any such decision has been taken.
The interest in the photograph is partly rooted in Shah’s longstanding public praise for Rai.
What Did Amit Shah Say About Nityanand Rai in Ujiarpur?
‘Nityanand Rai is my close friend’
During the 2024 Lok Sabha election campaign in Bihar, Shah made his support for Rai clear at a rally in Ujiarpur, Samastipur, on May 6.
“Nityanand Rai is my close friend,” Shah told the gathering, urging voters to elect Rai with a large margin. He went on to say that if Rai was sent to Parliament with a big victory, he would “make him a big man”.
Rai subsequently won the Ujiarpur Lok Sabha seat.
Shah has praised Rai’s work
Shah has also publicly praised Rai for his work during the Covid-19 pandemic.
While recalling the difficult period, Shah said Rai had handled responsibilities when Shah himself was unwell. He also praised Rai’s work for Ujiarpur, comparing it favourably with his own work for his parliamentary constituency, Gandhinagar.
Shah has, on other occasions, spoken positively about Rai’s working style, dedication, and handling of responsibilities in the Home Ministry.
What does the latest photograph mean?
For now, the photograph does not establish any impending change in Rai’s position.
Visits between senior political leaders and their colleagues are not unusual. But given Shah’s public remarks about Rai and the possibility of changes in the Union Council of Ministers, the latest picture has inevitably drawn political attention.
Whether the visit carries any larger political significance or is simply a personal interaction remains unclear.
Does the Visit Signal a Cabinet Expansion?
For now, what is clear is that the photograph has once again put the spotlight on the relationship between Shah and the Bihar BJP leader he has publicly described as a close friend.
