India’s Harnaaz Sandhu made history on Sunday as she won the title of Miss Universe 2021 beauty pageant. 21 years old Harnaaz, represented India at the 70th Miss Universe 2021, which was held in Eilat, Israel.
After a 21 year long wait, a Punjabi girl brought back the laurel Miss Universe crown to India. Before Harnaaz Sandhu, only two Indians have won this title of Miss Universe; the first one was Sushmita Sen in 1994 and later Lara Dutta won the crown in 2000.
Harnaaz Sandhu claimed the crown edging out Paraguay’s Nadia Ferreira and South Africa’s Lalela Mswane. She also won the title of the Times Fresh Face in 2017 and the title of Femina Miss India Punjab in 2019.
She was dressed in a shimmery gown which was designed by transwoman designer Saisha Shinde, beauty queen Sandhu looked gorgeous in her attire.
After beating contestants from 80 countries and making history as she was crowned Miss Universe Harnaaz Sandhu poured in from all over the internet on Monday morning.
Actor Lara Dutta tweeted, “Congratulations, @HarnaazSandhu03!!!! Welcome to the club!!! We’ve waited 21 long years for this!!! You make us So So proud!!! A billion dreams come true!!!@MissDivaorg”.
Sushmita Sen shared a couple of photos of her from the beauty pageant and wrote, “Har Hindustani Ki Naz’ Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu #MissUniverse2021 #INDIAAAAAA Soooooo proud of you!!!!
