At least 15 Indian tourists are feared to have died after a boat carrying Indian nationals capsized near Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island on Saturday, according to local media reports.
The Indian Embassy in Hanoi confirmed the incident in a post on X, saying, “In a tragic incident, a boat carrying several Indian tourists has capsized near Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam.”
The embassy said search and rescue operations are underway and that local authorities are working to establish the exact circumstances of the accident. It added that the details of the incident are still being verified.
According to Vietnamese authorities, the boat was carrying 32 Indian tourists and four crew members. Reports said the speedboat was travelling from Hon May Rut Island to An Thoi Port when it overturned around 400 metres from the shore.
To assist those affected, the Indian mission has set up emergency control rooms at the Embassy in Hanoi and the Consulate General of India in Ho Chi Minh City.
