Supreme Court dismisses curative petition of Nirbhaya convict Pawan Gupta

The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed the curative petition of one of the four death row convicts, Pawan Kumar Gupta in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case.

The dismissal came a day before a scheduled hanging of all the four convicts.

Gupta had filed a curative plea before the top court seeking commutation of his death sentence to life imprisonment.

He was the last convict in the case who had not exhausted his legal options of a curative petition. The Apex Court has already rejected the curative petitions of the remaining three.

On February 17, a Delhi Court had issued fresh death warrants against the four convicts- Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh Singh which orders their hanging on March 3 at 6am.

All four men were convicted and sentenced to death for raping a 23-year-old paramedic student in a moving bus in the national capital on the intervening night of December 16-17, 2012.

She passed away at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore while undergoing the treatment.
