Shiromani Akali Dal to hold ‘chakka jam’ in Punjab on September 25 against farm Bills

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), an NDA ally, on Tuesday announced road blockades across Punjab on September 25 to protest against the farm Bills passed by both the Houses of Parliament.

SAD leaders will lead the protests across Punjab for three hours on September 25 in protest against farm bills, Senior Akali leader Daljit Singh Cheema said.

A delegation of Shiromani Akali Dal on Monday met President Ram Nath Kovind over farm bills.

SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal said, “We requested the President not to sign on ‘anti-farmer’ bills that have been forcefully passed in Rajya Sabha. We requested him to send back the bills to the Parliament.”

On September 17, Union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal resigned from the Modi government in protest against the farm bills.

On Sunday, Rajya Sabha passed the Farmers’ and Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020 and Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020, amid protest and chaos by Opposition MPs.

The bill was passed with a Voice vote in Rajya Sabha.
