Rape survivor set ablaze by 5 men in UP’s Unnao

A rape victim from Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao was allegedly set on fire early on Thursday morning by five men including one who was accused of raping her, police said.

The incident happened when the accused, out on bail, attempted to burn the woman when she was on her way to court for the hearing in the rape case. She was reportedly alone at the time of the incident.

The woman has been referred to the hospital where her condition is said to be critical, sources said.

The woman was allegedly raped few months ago and had filed a complaint in March this year. The accused was arrested and later had been granted bail, police said.

Reacting to the incident, Congress leader Priyanka slammed Union Home Minister Amit Shah and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath over the law and order situation in the state. “Union Home Minister and UP Chief Minister blatantly lied clearly that law system in the state has improved. There is anger in the mind seeing such incidents everyday. BJP leaders should also opt out of fake propaganda,” Priyanka said in a tweet.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP Majeed Memon expressed shock over the incident and in a tweet said, “Rape survivor in Unnao with 80% burn is struggling for life. She had made two complaints against the threat of rape earlier yet we couldnot protect her. Pathetic.”
