Confirming yet again its reputation for being the most unsafe city for women in India, Delhi witnessed yet another brutal gangrape on Sunday 16 December. A 23-year-old medical student was gangraped on a moving white line bus while travelling from Munirka to Uttam Nagar. The girl along with her male friend, who objected, were stripped and thrown off the bus at Mahipalpur in south Delhi. The friend works for a private firm.
The Delhi Police said Monday 17 December evening that it has rounded up four men who were involved in the gruesome crime. The chartered bus on which the girl was raped was also found in Noida.
On Sunday night the girl and the boy were reportedly returning home after watching a movie at Select City Walk in Saket, south Delhi. Five people who were in the bus started harassing the student. Her friend, who objected to their behaviour, was thrashed with an iron rod and assaulted. The bus staff was also allegedly involved in the incident.
The police arrived after the duo was thrown off the bus and raised an alarm. They were then taken to AIIMS Trauma Centre for medical assistance. The girl was later shifted to Safdarjung Hospital. While she is on a ventilator and critical; her friend is being treated for head injuries. The police have registered an FIR under section 376 at Vasant Vihar Police Station.
Stating that the license of the private bus operator had been cancelled, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Diksit said, “We will take stern measures to ensure such incidents aren’t repeated. The government will act tough and those behind the tragic incident will not be spared.”
Senior BJP leader VK Malhotra blaming the Congress government asked, “Sheila Dikshit is the chief minister; Sonia Gandhi is there at the Centre, Krishna Tirath is a minister, there is National Commission, but despite all this cases of rape are on the rise in Delhi. Why was action not initiated?”
National Commisison for Women Chairperson Mamta Sharma said, “The incident has taken place in a thickly populated area — Munirka to Mahipalpur. Due to the failure and carelessness of the police such an incident has occurred.” She said she will approach Delhi CM Shiela Dixit to ensure such incidents do not occur in the future. The police have detained four people and impounded four buses.

This is horrific!
Can the government be urged to put policemen on buses, at least for the interim period before the “stern measures” called for by CM Shiela Diksit are enforced.

These guys should be hanged to death..they dont deserve to be Indians and put us on shame for sharing the same citizenship as they do
It was a stray incident in a private bus. What could the police have possibly done? Be reasonable.
Also why all the focus on the sex and not on the physical violence? I don’t get it. Isn’t violence and murder happening everyday anyways? How does an added element of sex make this incident special, and the victim a hero? Please explain if you can.
This is d worst which can happen to women in India. A country where v worship Goddesses n young girls r treated as Durga, this incident and many more which r happening in all parts of our country have held our head down in shame. This is d reason y parents today feel scared in raising a girl child. N the govnt wud take this case running for years. Such criminals shud b hanged naked in the street, n killed not by any rope, bt by tearing bit by bit every piece n part of their body, so that they n many more of them who are still un noticed get a lesson to learn. Until such stern steps r taken, there wud nt b a reduction in such heinous incidents.
i support u, they r subjected to third digree tourcher before hanging them, they shd b tourchered infront of public, let people of the nation take step, not by any political’s.
it is totally falt of humen systems and mind set. we need a good lecturer to change our mind set. NOW REALLY WE NEED ONE LEADER.
