‘Kashmir Internal matter’, says India after UNSC closed-door meet

India on Friday said that the country’s decision to scrap provisions of Article 370 that have special status to Jammu and Kashmir was an internal matter. India also said that Pakistan was trying to mislead the world.

The statement came after the UN Security Council held a closed-door meeting to discuss revocation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.

India’s envoy to United Nations, Syed Akbaruddin said that Article 370 has no external ramifications. “India’s position was and remains that matter related to Article 370 of the Constitution is entirely an internal matter of India,” Syed Akbaruddin said.

There were some who tried to project an alarmist approach to the situation, which is far from the ground realities, Akbaruddin said.

“The recent decisions taken by the Government of India and our legislative bodies are intended to ensure that good governance is promoted, social-economic development is enhanced for our people in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh,” Akbaruddin added.

Taking a swipe at Pakistan, Akbaruddin said Islamabad should stop terror and start talks.

On August 5, India revoked special status to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 and split into two Union Territories — Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
