Advocate Indira Jaising urges Nirbhaya’s mother to forgive convicts, follow Sonia Gandhi’s example

Senior advocate Indira Jaising has urged Nirbhaya’s mother Asha Devi to forgive the men convicted for the 2012 gang rape and murder of her daughter.

The advocate on Friday took to twitter to make the request shortly after Asha Devi expressed her disappointment when a Delhi Court postponed the date of execution of the four convicts.

“While I fully identify with the pain of Asha Devi, I urge her to follow the example of Sonia Gandhi who forgave Nalini and said she didn’t not want the death penalty for her. We are with you but against death penalty,” Jaising tweeted.

A Delhi court yesterday issued a fresh death warrant against four Nirbhaya convicts and set a new date for their execution.

The four convicts will be hanged on February 1, at 6 AM as per the new directive of the court.

The new warrant was issued hours after President Ram Nath Kovind rejected a mercy plea filed by Mukesh Singh, one of the convicts.

The 23-year-old paramedic student was gang-raped and brutally assaulted on the intervening night of December 16-17, 2012 in a moving bus in the national capital.

She passed away at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore while undergoing the treatment.
